Bert Fox Community High School students hosted a virtual visit from Senator Margaret Dawn Anderson of the Northwest Territories, coordinated through the Canadian Senate’s S’ENGAGE program.
Senator Anderson, the only senator representing the Northwest Territories, is an Inuvialuk with over two decades of experience in territorial and federal public service. Her career has focused on social justice, family wellness, and advancing the rights of Indigenous peoples.
During her presentation, Senator Anderson shared her journey from her home in Tuktoyaktuk to her appointment to the Senate in 2018. She provided personal insights into the work of the Senate, humanizing its often-misunderstood role and illustrating how senators advocate for meaningful change in Canada. Her approachable and engaging storytelling captivated the students as she spoke about her experiences in both governance and advocacy.
As part of the S’ENGAGE session, students prepared and asked thoughtful questions about her roles and advocacy work in the Senate and its committees, resulting in meaningful dialogue about systemic challenges, reconciliation, and the importance of Indigenous and female representation at the highest levels of government. By connecting with Senator Anderson, students witnessed the real-world application of these concepts and how we can each serve to help shape a more equitable and inclusive future for Canada. The event empowered students to think critically, engage in civic life, and aspire to leadership roles in their communities and beyond.
Bert Fox Community High School extends its sincere gratitude to Senator Anderson and the S’ENGAGE program for providing this impactful learning opportunity.
